EMMA WYLIE JEWELLERY

Designer / Maker : Emma Wylie

First Established in 2015

Emma Wylie is a fine jewellery artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. Each piece in her collection is designed and made by hand, created in small batches using traditional gold smithing techniques. The natural imperfections of the handmade are celebrated in Emma's work as they are what make each piece unique.

From her workshop in Glasgow, Emma enjoys creating one-off pieces and limited collections inspired by natural textures. Often using found objects from the landscapes around Scotland's coastlines as inspiration.

“I'm fascinated by the minute details of the coastal landscape and the ever changing textures that build up along the shoreline.”

From Coast to Collection

Using her own moulds and carving techniques, Emma works with precious metals and stones to capture the tactile quality of the objects that many of us pick up from the beach.

Using traditional goldsmithing techniques that include wax carving, lost wax casting, forging and stone setting. Many of her pieces are carved by hand in wax before being cast using the lost wax casting technique, making them entirely unique and one of a kind.

Within her workshop Emma aims to use reclaimed and recycled materials wherever possible. The majority of the gold and silver used in the main body of her collections is 100% recycled as standard. Emma also makes it a priority to work with trusted suppliers to guarantee that her stones are sourced in a responsible manner and can be traced from reputable mines.

Sustainability

Within the workshop Emma is working hard to minimise plastic, especially single-use, re-using as much packaging as possible within the workshop for example when storing work or posting pieces to be assayed.

All elements of EMMA WYLIE packaging have been chosen carefully and can be recycled or composted. Branded boxes are supplied for you to safely store your pieces when they are not being worn and each accompanying jewellery box is FSC®-certified and the glue, paper and cardboard are all 100% eco-friendly.

In hand with the slow fashion movement and in order to minimise waste, Emma makes most pieces to order. Each piece is made by hand and the description for every jewellery piece provides a guide of the timescale for production.

Underwater Inspiration

In the summer of 2022 Emma took part in an underwater artists residency with Argyll Coast and Islands Hope Spot. The Argyll Coast and Islands Hope Spot is a community-led celebration of this part of Scotland's world-class riches. It stretches from Ardnamurchan to Loch Sween.

Throughout the summer eleven artists, musicians and writers gathered in the Hope Spot to take part in a snorkelling artists' residency. With support of knowledgeable ecologists, fellow marine artists and a qualified safety swimmer they made work underwater and on land, bringing to life an often hidden world.

Emma is currently developing collections inspired by the marine life observed while on the residency. You can learn more about Emma's design inspiration here.
