Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Below I'll share with you a few tips about how to use a professional ring sizer.

Tips for measuring your ring size accurately. . .

  • Temperature is important!

Do not try to measure your ring size when your hands are cold as your fingers could be up to a size smaller than usual!

Similarly, the opposite is true when your hands are too hot, for example if you have just been exercising your hands may be warmer than usual and could be up to a size larger. The ideal time to measure your ring size is when your hands are at a comfortable room temperature.

  • Measure each finger individually.

You have more than one ring size. You may not want to wear all of your rings on the same finger, and knowing the ring size of your right index finger does not help when ordering a ring to wear on your left ring finger. So make sure to measure them all individually.

Each hand is different. Something many people don't realise is that the ring sizes on one hand are usually about one size larger than the corresponding ring sizes on the other. For example, your middle finger on your left hand is likely to be a different size to your middle finger on your right hand.

  • Measure your hands a few times throughout the day.

Your fingers can change size throughout the day. Some people may notice their fingers are slightly swollen first thing in the morning, they can also be at their largest towards the end of the day. So to be safe it's best to measure your fingers a few times throughout the day.

  • Choose the smaller size.

When measuring your ring sizes I recommend you keep going down in size until you find a size that won't slide onto your finger, then go back up to the last size that did fit your finger. A lot of the time when I'm helping customers measure their ring size they will stop too soon at a size that's slightly too big.

Your ring should fit your finger comfortably. It should be snug enough not to fall off, but loose enough to slide over your knuckle. If you are trying to choose between two sizes, I recommend choosing the smallest size that you can get on and off comfortably.

  • A wide band will feel tighter than a narrow band.

When purchasing a wide band, I recommend ordering a full size larger than your normal ring size. Wide bands come into contact with more surface area, and will feel tighter than a thinner band. A similar effect happens when you are wearing more than one ring on the same finger. You may notice the more rings you put on, the tighter they begin to feel.

  • If you get the ring sizer stuck, don't panic! Grab the moisturiser.

Don't worry, it will always come off. Occasionally when trying on ring sizers you may come across one that slides on okay but gets a bit stuck when you try to take it off. This is normal, it happens every time, and it always comes off again!

It has likely happened because your hands are getting warm from the friction of trying multiple ring sizers on. One of my tips for getting the ring sizers to slide off again, is to add a bit of moisturiser to the finger in question. It will reduce the friction between your finger and the ring sizer and the sizer should slide off again easily.

Another method is to run your hand under cold water and add a bit of washing up liquid, this should have the same effect. Try not to twist the ring sizer as you pull it as this can cause your finger to swell slightly with the friction. Instead just gently pull it until it slides over your knuckle again.

  • Remember to make a note of it!

Once you've found your ring size or sizes, remember to keep a note of them and which finger they correspond to. Pin it to your fridge or your notice board and that way if your family / friends or partner want to order you a ring as a gift they will have all the information readily available.

  • Ring sizes can change.

Yes, your ring size, like your dress size can change! So bear in mind that if you lose or gain weight, your rings may no longer fit like they used to. Sometimes it's worth measuring your ring sizes again if it's been a while since you last checked.

  • Not all rings can be re-sized!

Some rings cannot be resized without causing damage, for example stone set rings or heavily detailed designs. So it's always best to get it right first time! Please check the item product page for details on re-sizing before placing your order.
